The Hockey National Schools Games Tournament, was concluded on the 16th of September 2014, where the Royalists were able to add to their form and performance for the year thus far, as well as continue the winning streak with confidence as they were crowned the Champions of the Hockey National Schools Games.

The pre-quarter final game saw Royal College up against Darmadootha College, Badulla, where the Royalists were able to pull of a comprehensive win over the rivals, with a score of 9-2. Thineth Karunaratne, Malithra Yoshan & Shaheer Bari (Captain) displayed skill and were able to score two goals each while Imaadh Dole, Nelaka Wedagama and Pasindu Charuke scored one goal each.

Thereafter, the Royalists were given the mammoth task overcoming Christ Church College Matale, who packed a punch and were the defending champions going into this tournament with confidence for consecutive victories. However, after an intense battle. Royal College managed to come out on top with Thienth Karunaratne scoring the only goal of the game, which saw the Royalists overcome the defending champions and progressing to the Semi Final.

The much anticipated Semi Final between Royal College and Joseph Vaz College saw Royal dominating in all areas of the game, whereby they achieved a full time score of 6 – 1, which was a confidence boost for the Royalists going into the final. Captain Shaheer Bari, and Malithra Yoshan were able to score two goals each while Imaadh Dole and Thineth Kaunaratne contributed by scoring one goal each.

With the dawn of the finals of the tournament, Royal College were all set to face the finalists, Zahira College Matale, as the game was anticipated to be the best of the tournament, and rightly so, with the gathered crowd witnessing a heated battle between the two schools. In the midst of the intensity, the skillful Centre Forward Imaadh Dole managed to score a solitary goal, which proved to be the only goal of the game, which saw Royal emerging victorious and clinching the title of Champions. A repeat of history, as Royal were crowned champions of the National Schools Games beating Zahira College, Matale, in the year 1994.

With the end of a successful tournament for the Champions, the Vice Captain of the side, Malith Rasanga, who also represented the Sri Lanka under 18 side at the Junior Asia Cup, was adjudged as the player of the tournament, which is an honourary mention and award, as it is a prestigious achievement in hockey. It is also noteworthy that the Royal team was coached by the vastly experienced Mr.Rohan Dissanayake, who undoubtedly did a fine job in moulding the players right throughout this year, as the reflection of his hard work is displayed through the hard work of the players in this great victory.

The power and skill of the champion Royal side, has been built up over the years, as the current team has had success right throughout their hockey journey at College, as they were crowned Under 9 Champions in 2005, Under 11 Champions in 2007, Under 13 Champions in 2009, Under 15 Champions in 2011, Under 17 All island Champions in 2013, Western Province under 18 Champions in 2014, and now being crowned as the  National Schools Games Champions of 2014, which is truly is the icing on the cake with regard to their successful journey in hockey over the years.

When considering the success and clinical finishing of the current Hockey Team of Royal College,. it can be safely said that the current team has proven to be one of the most successful teams in the history of Royal College Hockey, and will undoubtedly carry this form forward, for the success of Royal College Hockey in the future.
