If there is a dream that every school debater in the country has, regardless of their language or location, that dream would be to be announced as victors in the Sri Lanka Schools Debating Championship organized by the Faculty of Law, University of Colombo. This dream came true for the 2nd consecutive year for the  Royal College Senior Sinhala Debating Team, which composed of Pasan Perera, Pasindu Madhusanka and Mino Maheesha on the 18th of June as they maintained an untarnished undefeated status throughout this year’s tournament.

The Senior Sinhala Team of Royal College entered the tournament in tremendous form and with great promise after emerging champions in no less than three debating championships maintaining an undefeated status. In the qualifier round they were against The Senior team of Isipathana College Colombo. After a victory over them with a 3-0 judgment, Royal was met by the Senior Team of Methodist College and St.Paul’s Girls’ School Milagiriya. It was very visible that Royal emerged victorious with greatest ease against the aforesaid teams. Subsequently, the Senior Team unexpectedly went against the Royal C Team, in which the Senior Team achieved victory. Then they were against Mahinda College, Galle who were undefeated at the time. Royal emerged victorious with a 3-0 judgement. Next Royal was against the only remaining undefeated team of the tournament, Ananda College Colombo. It was after an intense exhibition; Royal emerged victorious and was crowned the league champions as the only undefeated team in the tournament.

The Senior Sinhala Debating Team entered the knockout rounds in premium form and was unfortunately matched with the B team of Royal. It was only after an intense fight that Royal B Team subsided to make way for the Senior Team. Royal was met by the Senior Team of Nalanda College in the quarter final round. It was yet again an easy victory of 3-0 for Royal. Then it was time for the Semi Final. The Nalanda College B team emerged victorious in the quarter final and was scheduled to debate against Royal. After a verbal clash full of pure skill and determination, Royal emerged victorious and qualified to the final debate of The Sri Lanka Schools Debating Chamionship 2016.

An unfortunate despute led to the disqualification of their opponents in the finals, giving the Royalists a walkover and crowning them Champions.
