“To Fight with honor,
to win with glory,
In gold we’ll write
their triumphant story”
The annual Colours Awarding Ceremony of Royal College was successfully concluded on the 28th of April 2017 at the Navaragahala. Under the distinguished patronage of Major General Dr. Chelliah Thurairaja as the chief guest and Mr. Sarinda Unamboowe as the guest of honour, sportsmen with excellent performance in the year 2016 were recognized and awarded college colours. Nearly 300 sportsmen were recognized for their performance in 35 different sports.
Inaugurated in 1997, the Colours Awarding Ceremony strives to recognize the talented sportsmen produced by Royal College. While colours were introduced during the tenure of Principal H.L Reed in the early 1920s and awarded at the general assembly, it was not until 1997 that a ceremony of this caliber was introduced. Ever since then the Colours Awarding Ceremony has been one of the most anticipated events in the school sporting calendar.
Along with College Colours, several awards are reserved for sportsmen with exceptional performance in their respective sports. The Maalyn Dias Scholarship for the most outstanding emerging sportsmen , The R. A. B. A. Gunasekara Memorial Fund Awards for the youngest sportsman and the most deserving sportsman in Athletics and Rugby as well as the Group Captain D. S. Wickremasinghe Memorial Trophy awarded to sportsmen who obtain colours for three or more sports was awarded respectively to sportsmen with noteworthy performances during the year 2016.
Following the ceremony the fellowship dinner hosted by the Prefects’ Council was held at the college main hall, to commemorate the coloursmen for the year 2016. It was a spectacular evening that saw the most deserving sportsmen in each sport being rewarded for their commitment towards college.
