The rapid spread of Dengue around the country has increased. Approximately 42.37% of dengue cases were reported from the Western province and the highest number of Dengue cases were reported within the past few weeks. The Prefects’ Council of Royal College 2016/2017 together with the Clubs and Societies organised a Zoning project throughout the college premises to eradicate all breading areas of Dengue and to form a clean, healthy environment for students to learn and enjoy their outdoor activities with minimum mosquito situations.

The Zoning project commenced on Saturday, the 15th of July 2017 at 8.00 a.m. All the members representing Clubs and Societies were given a briefing by the Deputy Head Prefect of Clubs & Societies along with the Principal of Royal College, the District Commissioner of Colombo and the Director general of Rupavahini regarding the days proceedings. The event was also graced by Hon. Rosy Senanayake. The Prefects’ Council and the students were extremely fortunate to have this on a day which also marked a national wide dengue eradication campaign. The Clubs and Societies were divided into 12 separate zones located throughout the College. Four Clubs were set to one zone scattering 48 Clubs and Societies around and throughout the College. The students brought their own cleaning equipment and started their work as soon as the briefing ended. Helpers were sent by the Ministry of Health in order to assist the boys with regard to this task with equipment specialised in eradicating Dengue mosquitos.

Free refreshments were provided courtesy of Nestle Lanka and Media Coverage was given by Rupavahini and ITN.
The main objective of this project was to leave no stone unturned, eradicating any all mosquito breading locations around school and that’s exactly what the Prefects Council along with the Clubs and Societies of Royal College were able to accomplish. Last but not least something we always believed was that Royalists are different because we lead by example. The Prefects’ Council 2016/2017 strongly believes that this step taken will be beneficial in terms to handing it over to the next generation in a better way than it was handed down to us.
