The 62nd Annual Islamic Day Celebrations organized by the Royal College Islamic Society commenced on the 22nd of July 2017 from 3.00 p.m. onwards at the Navarangahala with Mr. Omar Kamil, former Mayor of Colombo and the Chairman of the National Enterprise Development Authority as the Cheif Guest. The guest of honor for the day was Mr. B. A. Abeyrathnan, Principal of Royal College.
The proceedings of the day commenced with the school song and recital of Quirath, followed by the welcome address by the student chairman, Ziyard Awn. This was followed by the Release of the 59th editon of the Sout-ut-Tullab, the Students Voice Souvenir and the Secretaries’ report submitted by the joint secretary, Fayyad Hameed. This was followed by the Principal’s address. Speeches in Sinhala, Tamil and English by the students who won their respective oratory competitions were then delivered. The Cheif Guest Mr. Omar Kamil made valuable contributions in his speech, emphasizing the use of Islamic teachings in day to day activities and also fruitful moments from his school career as a Muslim student of Royal College.
Students from grade 1-9 entertained the audience with a variety of items which included Qaseedahs in tunes only the ears could wish for! During the Interval a solo permanence was performed by a student while refreshments were provided. This was followed by the awarding of prizes to winners of the Inter Grade Competitions and to the winners of the All Island Inter School Competitions, organized by the Islamic Society of Royal College. The day’s proceedings concluded with the vote of thanks delivered by the Joint Secretary, Athiff Munas followed by the recital of salawath and the National Anthem.
