S Thomas’ retains E F C Pereira memorial trophy for another year.

It is yet another brand new day with the Royal tennis team visiting S Thomas’ College, Mt Lavinia for the 9th annual Royal Thomian tennis encounter. The crowds of either school were gathering at the courts to witness an intense encounter this year as the two equally talented teams prepared themselves to battle out for the E F C Pereira memorial trophy.

The main event for the day started off with Royal winning the first single played by non-other than the world ranked player, Sharmal Dissanayake.  His powerful groundstrokes and overpowering gameplay gave an easy win for Royal with a score of 9-0. Yet the Thomains soon went on to even the tables as they followed up with a win of 1-9 at the next single against Royal’s captain Dhanushka Abeywardena. The last single with Eroo Samarasinghe playing for Royal’s side saw an intense game as both players were exhibiting equal skill at the game. Ending this close match at a score of 9-8 with a win for Royal gave the victory of the single match series to Royal College as 2-1.

Soon after the double matches began with the first being played with Suren and Kuganeshan on the Royal side. Another close match that captivated the entire crowd with sheer talent and intensity ended with a favourable result to S Thomas’ at a score of 8-9. The wins were on par as the last match for the day began. The doubles started off with Udishan Vikum playing on the Royal side. Despite a good game by Royal, Thomians managed to win this final match putting Royal to the score of 6-9, thus winning the encounter.

The event ended with S Thomas’ College retaining the E F C Pereira memorial trophy.
