History and Background

The catholic students union along with the other religious societies was formed during Principal Dudley Kenneth George de Silva’s period in 1954. However, before the catholic students union formed, it all began with the introduction of the R.C.Y.M.C.A. formed in 1894 which was the first institution in college where students discussed affairs on religion. The main purpose of the union then and now is the annual carol service which is jointly organized with the student Christian movement.

This carol service takes place in the month of December close to Christmas at the main hall in order to celebrate the birth of Christ. It is not only a religious event, but an event where the whole school gets together to celebrate Christmas. Traditionally, a guest preacher ends the service by blessing the Royal family of teachers, students, parents and well wishers.

The main objective of the catholic students union is to spread the word of God to all catholic students of college and to uphold their faith in the religion. The Catholic Students Union aims to enable members to meet, work, pray & celebrate in the spirit of the catholic tradition.

The society hopes to provide opportunities for deepening the understanding of the catholic faith & lead a good student life at college setting examples for fellow students. Their other priority is to let the outsiders and schoolmates to know that the Catholics in school are actively involved.

As the only body representing Catholics of the college, the society strives to emphases students to further the mission of the Catholic Church though spiritual, educational & catholic leadership. Further more, it plans to break free from the state of being an internal club of a school club and make its presence felt to the external society as well.
