Badminton at Royal College had started along with TT around 1945 as a “lunch hour game” as a part of the Indoor Games Club. Then in 1947, a small band of enthusiasts headed by C.P (Chandi) Chanmugam, A.R.L Wijesekera, the Schoorman brothers Sam and Dick, Bala Sivaratnam, K. Sri Skandarajah and Ivor Andriesz had been involved to make it a college sport , and therefore, the first Captain of Royal College Badminton on record is C.P Chanmugam. Badminton has emerged as one of the most popular and keenly contested sports amongst schools today. Due to the enthusiasm and rich history behind this sport at Royal and STC, The under 19 Badminton teams of Royal and S. Thomas’ compete annually for the “RANIL WIJESEKERA CHALLENGE TROPHY”. This Trophy was donated by Dr. A.R.L Wijesekera in 2010 for this encounter, which was first played in 2007 the current tally stands at 2 wins each for Royal and STC, with the encounter in 2011 not being played.
