In 1955, gymnastics was introduced to Royal College as a sport. However, it did not gain popular interest and failed to be recognized as a sport. In time, with the efforts made by all members of the team, the attitude towards the sport changed, and today it is considered a major sport in the Royal College itinerary.
The first Captain of Royal College Gymnastics was I.U. Ranasinghe. The coach during that time was Anton Dias who still serves the school as gymnastics coach. Players such as B.A.A.P. Sanjaya and Sahan Thejana Peiris have performed up to international levels in this sport.
