Tennis is a sport that has brought Royal College many an opportunity to be proud of. The sport played extensively at Royal proves its excellence and class by producing island ranking players and well experienced future coaches.

From the beginning, the Royal College Tennis teams have been facing the All – Island Inter School Tennis Tournament organized by the Ministry of Sports held annually at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association. The school teams have kept up a string of unforgettable performances and the Overall Championship Trophy was constantly in the hands of Royal. To top it off, Royal won in all age group categories from Under-11 to Under-19 and obtained the overall and separate age group championship with ease.

A few years ago, the Old Boys Union of Royal College and St. Thomas College discussed initiating a “Tennis Roy – Tho encounter” wth the funding and assistance from the respective unions. Thus the two schools started the “Tennis Roy-Tho Encounter”. Royal College had been winning a majority of the matches at this encounter. The purpose of the match is to create a bond between the two schools and work for the betterment of the two schools.

The students of Royal can be part of the tennis team from grade 4. Since then, if you are a stable and consistent player pitching in your talents for the success of the team, one can represent the school up until the Under 19 age category.
