The Gavel Club of Royal College initiated a project called “Speak Out 2013”, an inter school oratorical competition, organized jointly with the English Literary Society of Ladies’ College.

The Preliminary rounds of the competition took place on the 22nd of June at Royal College. 33 schools participated, and there were 533 participants in total. There were 3 categories, namely speech, news reading and compering. each category was divided into under 13, 15 & 17. Presentations for all participants of all 3 categories were conducted by experts in each field. Of the 500 odd participants, 90 were selected for semifinals.

Before the semifinals, a workshop was held for the semifinalists, which was conducted at the Royal College Union on the 27th of June 2013. The workshop was conducted by Toastmaster qualified individuals to improve their public speech skills.

The semifinals were held on the 30th of June 2013 at 8.00. a.m. at Ladies’ College. 45 finalists were selected.

Finals were held on the 6th of July 2013, at Royal College. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd of each age group of each category were selected, along with the overall champions of Speech, News Reading and Compering. Speech was won by Fadila Imtiaz of Hejaaz International, News reading by Mariam Masharik of Bishop’s College, and Compering by Vinuri Weerawardena of Bishop’s College.

The awarding ceremony was held on the 10th of July, at the Royal College Main Hall. The Chief Guest was Prof. Neluka Silva, professor of English at the Colombo University.The overall champion for Speech was Fadila Imtiaz of Hejaaz International,for News reading was Mariam Masharik of Bishop’s College, and for Compering was Vinuri Weerawardena of Bishop’s College.All participants received certificates, and those who were placed received medals and trophies.
