The World Environmental day for the year 2014, was celebrated at the Royal College Navarangahala on the 5th of June 2014, where a number of esteemed guests were present to grace the occasion.

His Excellency the President Mahinda Rajapakse was kind enough to grace the occasion along with the Honorable Minister of Education, Bandula Gunawardena. A special award was presented to grade 3 student Suvindu Garusinghe by his excellency the President, to mark the launching of the project which facilitates waste segregation within the classrooms. Under this project, each class is given a set of three coloured bins to help the students inculcate the project discipline of separation of waste.

The Principal, Mr. Upali Gunasekera received the award on behalf of Royal College, presented by his Excellency the President, for the appreciation and recognition of the “Green Initiative” which has been of great prominence at Royal since its official launch. The Green Circle of Royal College play the responsible major role in the implementation of all Green projects within school.

It is a well know fact worldwide, that waste segregation is the effective but the most complex part in the waste management process, because it involves the change of attitude of the general society, so as to familiarize the everyday man with the waste segregation process which is in use today.

At Royal College, waste segregation is currently done by the workers, but as a leading and responsible education institution in Sri Lanka, students should be trained to follow the discipline, so that it may play a big role in their futures which will make sure that a positive message is disseminated to the society in general.

It is believed that if any good initiative starts at Royal, it will rapidly penetrate to the outside world and make its mark on society, and the Green Initiative is currently making its way through society to make a positive impact on society, and to work towards a greener tomorrow.
