The Annual Royal – Thomian Regatta & Boat Race, which was held on the 25th of October 2014 at the Colombo Rowing Club, saw S. Thomas’ College edging a victory after it came down to the final race.

With the beginning of the days races and proceedings, the S. Thomas’ College Crew found themselves leading by 16 points, having won the A pair, A scull and B scull races, while the Royalists were unable to make their mark on the points tally. However the Royalists displayed  great determination with a strong comeback lead by Skipper Lahiru Herath, to equalize the points at 16-16, after having won the B Pair, A double scull and B double scull races. In addition to this, the Royalists also won the C four race, the U-16 four race and the old boys race as well.

The Royalists, with a sudden burst of energy found themselves ahead of the Thomians, after having won the B four race, which placed Royal 8 points ahead of the Thomians, with the tally on 24-16.

As the entire days result came down to the final race, the A four, which is also known as the Boat Race, the game was on. The race was a do or die race for both the crews, as it was a race to grab 12 points and win the T.N. Fernando Trophy. Both crews started off well but the Thomians managed to win the race and secure the victory.

An exciting evening of Rowing with both sides displaying impressive performances. The result favoured the Thomians by the narrowest of margins ; 4 points. Final tally was 28-24 in favour of S. Thomas’ College.

The Royalists’ were not short of determination and confidence, as the comeback proved to the crowd that the Royal Crew is very capable. The Oarsmen have worked hard all year and improved leaps and bounds, and the improvement and the form will surely go on to help the Royalists in their mission of bringing the T.N. Fernando Trophy back home in 2015!
