The Tamil Debating Team of Royal College emerged champions of the Moot Court Debating Tournament organized by the Faculty of Law, University of Colombo held on the 13th, 14th and 27th of June 2015. Victory in the Finals against Hameed Al Husseini College saw the team lifting the shield for the first time in six years and third time overall, making Royal College the first team ever to achieve the feat. The A Team remained unbeaten throughout the tournament winning all the eight matches they have faced. All three Royal teams entering the Quarter Finals was another high point for Royal College in the tournament.  Teams B and C finished at fifth and sixth positions respectively while Team A topped the chart of the 27 teams that participated. The Moot Court Debating Tournament is the one and only parliamentary style debating tournament held in the island and it is considered to be one of the most anticipated All Island event in Tamil Debating Calendar. The Tamil Debating Team of Royal College has always been a force to reckon within this particular tournament. Royal College won the first two years since the inauguration of the competition in 2008 and has been into the Finals of the tournament for five times out of the eight.

Royal College A team emerged victorious against Hindu Ladies College A, Ladies College A, Royal College B, Hameed Al Husseini College and S. Thomas’ College A in the group stages which consisted of five matches. Royal College beat D.S.Senanayake College and Hindu College A in the Quarter finals and Semi finals respectively. Four debaters from Royal College got into the Top 10 list of Best Speakers of the tournament. S.Sajishnavan, I.Vinushmithan, M.Mayooran and B.Harish took fourth, fifth, eighth and ninth places respectively.

The dominance of Royal College on the Tamil debating arena is clearly visible as they went on in an unbeaten run of five tournaments this season starting from this June. The only loss came in the debating tournament organized by the University of Moratuwa on the 27th of June, in which Royal competed with a young team as the main team was debating in the finals at the Moot Court Debating Tournament.

The Tamil Debating Team of Royal College was also selected to participate in the All Island level of Tamil Day Competitions organized by the Ministry of Education by winning the provincial level competition which was held on the 18th of June beating their traditional rivals S. Thomas’ College for the third time in four days in the finals. With the 21st Royal Thomian Tamil Debate Encounter to be held on the third term of the year, Royal will look to cap off the season on a high by winning both the remaining major competitions and bringing the prestigious Kulasekaram Memorial Shield back to Reid Avenue.
