Offering an opportunity for students to educate themselves with the aid of the Internet, all computer labs at the Royal College have now turned to interactive online access points through 4G LTE (TDD) high-speed broadband links.

The College has five computer labs, equipped with modern computer facilities that are used by a large number of students daily for educational purposes. However, the Internet connectivity available was not sufficient to cater more than 200 computer terminals due to its narrow 128kbps bandwidth. As a result of this situation students were not being able to use the Internet for educational purposes even though they had the modern computer facilities.

Ending this long standing issue faced by students and teachers of Royal College, with the support of the Ministry of Education and the National Broadband Initiative of the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka, the computer labs at Royal College are now provided with high speed Internet connectivity that provides real fast Internet with a bandwidth of up to 40Mbps, supporting the students to do their studies in an interactive way. The technological superiority of the Dialog 4G LTE devices that have been provided, enables students to conduct interactive sessions such as live, real-time video conferencing through the Internet, with its 10Mbps up-link speed.

Commenting on the development of the Internet infrastructure of the school, Mr. Upali Gunasekera, the Principal of Royal College said, “With the improvement of online access, under the guidance of the Ministry of Education, we are now planning to take online education to the classroom level where students can learn beyond boundaries. These rich interactive education methods are essentially needed to produce a skilled young generation of those who could contribute to the development of this country through innovation. At the same time teachers can use additional resources that are available in the Internet to further enhance the quality of education levels within the classroom environment. I really expect to see a boost in education and am thankful to the Ministry of Education for selecting Royal College to carry out the Pilot Project”
