Royal College was the first school in Sri Lanka to introduce basketball as a sport for students. It is reported that the sport was initiated at Royal College in 1958. Over time numerous basketball players including Ajith Kuruppu and Chamath Danawansa went on to represent the national basketball team, providing testament to the quality of basketball at Royal.
The Royal Crown was first awarded to a basketball player in 2001 with Chamath Danawansa being awarded this honor. Elijah Sinthaby was the second basketball basketball player to be awarded this honor in 2011.
The Royal Thomian annual basketball encounter was first played in 2003 for the D.S Senanayeke Challenge trophy. Royal College recorded its first win and secured the D.S.Senanayake Challenge Trophy in 2010.
