History and Background

The general knowledge club was initiated as the “General Knowledge Society” back in 1976. The present club was inaugurated on 13th February 1981. The first student chairman of the club was Mr. N.I. Wijesekara and Mrs. Padmini Rajapakse, a great enthusiast of Quizzing, was the founding Teacher-in-charge. She held this post until the early 1990’s when she retired and Mrs. O.C. Samarasinghe and Mrs. Mano Kalupahana succeeded her. After Mrs. Mano Kalupahana’s retirement in 2010, Mrs. Disna Rajani became the senior teacher in charge of the club. She is assisted by Mrs. Nilmini Jayasekara.

In 1987, the Club initiated the first ever Inter-School Quiz Contest organized by a Sri Lankan school, which still exists as “Blue & Gold Quiz”. The  inter class quizzes started in 1999 and the individual quiz made its first appearance in the club’s calendar in 2005.

The Royal College Quiz Team is affiliated to the General Knowledge Club. Since the 1980’s it has continued its winning spirit and has been recognized as the best quiz team in Sri Lanka to this day. There’s a tradition which states that a Student Chairman or the General Secretary should be Quiz team members. It has been helpful in maintaining the strong connection between the Club and the Team.

Vision

The Vision of the club is to enhance general knowledge and popularizing quizzing as a mind sport among Royalists.

Mission

The Mission is to create a more sophisticated and more talented group of students with a vast and deep knowledge in different areas. Also we want students who can shoulder Royal College to place it at the top of the Sri Lankan quizzing arena.
