Forwards to the fore! The B.C Anghie trophy returns to Royal!
The encounter concluded on the 31st of May 2014, with Royal showing their dominance through the forwards, who gave no quarter for the Peterites, which saw Royal easing their way into a victory to bring back the B.C. Anghie trophy. At fulltime, the scoreboard read 18-05 in favour of the Royalists.
The game started off with Skipper Nimshan Jayawardena kicking off, which saw the next 20 minutes of the game to be evenly contested, as both teams created opportunities, but were not able to capitalize and make an impact on the scoreboard.
However, Royal managed to break the ice through a converting an awarded penalty, which gave momentum and kick started the performance that would be the highlight of the Rugby season so far.
The forwards displayed a collective performance which was nothing short of brilliant, as the first try came through a beautifully executed rolling maul, which saw the prop forward Supun Warnakulasooriya diving over for a try! The conversion was missed, and it saw the scoreboard reading 08 – 00 in favour of the Royalists. Not long after that, the referee blew for halftime, where both teams were reminded the tactics and the game plan.
The second half commenced with the Peterites kicking off, and putting up more of a fight as the defense and the opposition given to the Royalists was much more solid, which gave the fans an even more exciting game to witness. However, a moment of brilliance by Centre Three Quarter Bhanuka Gamage eased the pressure, as a he was able to outrun the Peterite Wing Three Quarter and score, which was a dellight to the eyes of the Royal supporters. The score at this point was 13 – 00 in favour of the Royalists.
The day didn’t end there for the peterites, as Supun Warnakulasooriya was able to score yet again, through an effective rolling maul, which was left unconverted, which saw the scoreboard reading 18 – 00 in favour of the Royalists.
Amidst the rampant display of Rugby put up by the Royalists, the peterites found consolation, as a try was scored through the three quarter line, as the Peterites were able to get on the scoreboard with 05 points, due to the conversion being unsuccessful.
Soon after, the referee blew for full time, as the Royalists triumphed and brought back the B.C. Anghie trophy. A brilliant display of Rugby by the Royalists, especially from the forwards, who were relentless, and displayed the best performance so far.
Final score – 18 – 05 in favour of the Royalists.
The Royalists will face Kingswood College on the 7th of June 2014 in Kandy, as it will be a game to watch out for, with both teams performing and impressing.
