The intense game of Rugby concluded on the 14th of June 2014, where the impressive performance displayed by Royal saw the returning of the Michael Gunaratne Trophy.

The game commenced with STC Kicking off, where not long after, Skipper Nimshan Jayawardena used his skill to penetrate the STC line of defense and score, to start off the days proceedings. With the scoreboard reading 05 – 00 in favour of the Royalists, the Thomians staged a daring comeback, where the Fly Half was able to create a gap and score. The conversion seemed fairly simple, but was missed by the Fly Half, which leveled the scores at 05 – 05.

The Royal forwards were once again at the top of their game, with excellent scrums and rolling mauls, which saw Supun Warnakulasooriya diving over for a try, which was converted with ease by Skipper Nimshan Jayawardena. Score at this point in time was 12 – 05 to the Royalists.

With many ploys working brilliantly, the Skipper was able to penetrate, score and convert yet again, which put the game further away from the Thomians. The scoreboard favoured Royal, with the scores being 19 – 05, much to the delight of the Royal supporters.

As the referee was about to blow for half time, STC managed to create an overlap down the wing and score, which was converted and brought STC back into the game. Scoreboard read 19 – 12 in favour of the Royalists at the half time break.

With Royal kicking off in the second half, some brilliant skill and vision by Centre Banuka Gamage created the opportunity for the wing three quarter Daniel Gulasekharam to score two back to back tries, which gave Royal a considerable lead, with the score on 31 – 12.

STC however had no plans of giving up, as they managed to score through their pack of forwards, which went unconverted and saw the scoreboard reading 31 – 17 to the Royalists.

Towards the latter stages of the game, Prop Forward Thiwanka Perera was able to dive over and score, which seemed like the last nail in the coffin as far as the Thomians were concerned. 36 points to 17 was the final score, but the game got a little interesting afterwards, where Royal were awarded two yellow cards and were down to 13 men, yet were still solid in defense and did not give anything away.

The efforts made by both teams were valiant efforts, as the game was interesting and intense and was certainly loved by the fans of both schools.

Final score : 36 – 17 in favour of the Royalists, where the crowd and the team saw Skipper Nimshan Jayawardena receiving the Michael Gunaratne Trophy.

The next game for Royal will be at Mount Lavinia, as Royal will face Science College on the 21st of June.
