Royal College Colombo has undoubtedly been the pioneer institution among the schools in Sri Lanka in terms of its continuous progression in creativity and innovation together with sustainable development in all modern fields.

The 3rd of December 2014 which is an important day in the field of information technology at Royal College accommodated the distinguished opening of a refurbished IT laboratory.  This project was carried out and initiated by the Royal College Group of 89 who commemorated their 25th anniversary of service to their alma mater. A prominent mention has to be made in light of the utmost efforts and dedication conveyed by the members of the group of 89 in making this initiative a great success.

It was half past seven on Wednesday morning when proceedings began. The distinguished dignitaries were welcomed and escorted to the location of the new lab which is adjoining the grade 7 block. Mr. Lalith Weerathunga graced the occasion as the distinguished Chief Guest. Mr. Weerathunga currently holds the post of Secretary to His Excellency the President of Sri Lanka. Upon entrance into the laboratory the prestigious event of cutting the ribbon took place, followed by the revealing of the commemorative plaque and the lighting of the traditional oil lamp. Mr. Weerathunga was accompanied by the Principal of Royal College Mr. Upali Gunasekara and the President of the Royal College group of 89, Dr. Prasad Katulanda. The other dignitaries present at the occasion were, the Senior Deputy Principal Mr. Sarath keerthisena, the Deputy Principal of the Primary section Mrs. C.L Attygalle,  the Secretary of the Royal College Union Mr. Chandana L. Aluthgama, the Secretary of the School Development Society Mr. Manoj De Silva, the IT committee chairman of the Royal College Union Mr. Mithila Mendis and the Head of the National Broadband Initiative of the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (TRC) Mr. Sanath Siriwardene, along with other special invitees.

After the initial activities at the newly refurbished laboratory, the dignitaries made their way to the College Main hall for the opening ceremony. The ceremony commenced with the College Anthem and was followed by the Welcome address by the Principal of Royal College. The event was attended by the Old Boys, The Academic staff of Royal, the Prefects and Students.  The speeches delivered by The President of the group of 89 Dr. Prasad Katulanda, The Secretary of the RCU Mr. Chandana L. Aluthgama followed thereafter. Next up in the agenda was the felicitation to all Old boys who contributed financially in making this event a success. It was followed by the inspiring speech delivered by the Chief Guest Mr. Lalith Weerathunga. Finally it was the Vote of thanks by the Head Prefect of Royal College Nipuna Ambanpola which concluded proceedings.

This project has indeed provoked the IT fraternity of Royal College with the best of resources in order to further uplift the standards of IT at College among its students and stakeholders. In order to signify the group of 89, these Old Royalists established as much as 89 Ultra-Modern Computers which once again brings Royal to the forefront as the first school in Sri Lanka to possess high speed internet with Fiber optic technology. The provision of the internet facility was provided under the guidance of the Ministry of Education under the National Broadband initiative (NBI) from the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (TRC) of Sri Lanka. In addition to the establishment of quality computers, the furniture and other equipment in the laboratory have been refurbished. Thus paving the way to a resourceful learning experience for the students of Royal College.
