Royal-Thomian Mini Battle 2017
The Mini Battle is the annual cricket encounter played for the Reed Gunasekara Memorial Trophy between the 2nd XI teams of Royal College and St. Thomas’ College prior to the 1st XI encounter. This year it was held on the 3rd and the 4th of March at Reid Avenue.
Thomian skipper won the toss and elected to bat first. The lad from Mt. Lavinia got off to a sound start with the help of Anuka Bulankulama and Bhaghya Dissanayake who managed to score half centuries. The Royal camp gave a good comeback after lunch when the Thomians decided to declare their innings at 198 for the fall of 7 wickets. Royal top order collapsed and the score was 70/5 at stumps on day.
On the second day Royal managed to to win the first innings thanks to two outstanding knocks by the skipper Gayan Dissanayake (64) and Thevindu Senaratne (55). Boys from Reid Avenue decided to halt their innings at 219 for the loss of 9 wickets. St. Thomas’ in their second essay were 118 for 7 wickets when play was called off on the second day.
