The Alles- Gunasekara cup which was recently played between Gateway College and Royal College came to an end with the boys from Reid Avenue emerging victorious. The encounter was brought to life with the idea of improving the relationship between international schools and government schools and to push forward the development of Basketball in the country.

The gentlemen in whose memory   the trophy is played for are considered as two major characters of both Gateway and Royal College. Mr.R.I. Alles who was first a teacher of Royal College was called upon by the ministry to help commence D.S Senanayake College and he was also the founder of Gateway College.  Mr. Gunasekara, who was the then Vice Principal of College, more famously known as “Kataya” due to his popularity and as a disciplinarian. The trophy which weighs approximately 5 – 6 KG’s was  constructed in silver and  revealed at the press conference  held at the  SSC VIP  room by the captain of Royal College Tharindu Balasuriya and Ishira Ritigahapola of Gateway College.

The 17th of February 2018 kicked off at the Henry Pedris Basketball courts with the under 15 encounter in which Gateway emerged victories with a score of 40-20. It was followed by the Girls under 19 match between Gateway College and Bishops College which ended with the result favoring the girls from Gateway

The main event, the boys under 19 match played for the Alles-Gunasekara  cup, commenced at 6pm. Undeniably, the match was a very heated and intense 60 minutes as both teams scored back and forth. As the final whistle was blown the score board read 46-43 in favor of Royal. Two boys from Reid Avenue took home the best defensive player and most valuable player awards of the match. All in all, the encounter was packed with entertainment and enjoyment for everybody.
