“It’s the school we fight for that makes it all worth it” – 2017 was a memorable year for sports at Royal College with the Royal spirit persevering all year round to bring a variety of inter – collegiate, national and international accolades to the table. The talented sportsmen of Royal College were rightly felicitated at the Colours Awarding Ceremony held on the 5th of April 2018 under the patronage of the Chief Guest Mr. Mahen Perera and Guest of Honour Mr. Rajiva Wijetunge.

The Colours Awarding Ceremony strives to celebrate and honour the exceptional sportsmen that Royal College produces each year, and the multitude of shields and trophies brought home and presented to the Principal at this year’s awarding ceremony was a testament to the legacy of the great institution that produced these young athletes.

A total of 224 Royalists were awarded colours for great achievements in their individual sports. Out of these sportsmen a total of 106 were inducted to the hall of fame as first year coloursmen. Merit Awards were awarded to the Air Cadet Wing, Cadet Band, Cadet Contingent and the College Scout Troop. History was further made this year as the sports of Rifle Shooting and Sailing were awarded Colours for the first time in Royal College.

Speeches by the Principal, Guest of Honour and Chief Guest as well as performances by the College Choir and Sinhala Drama Society added that extra touch of grandeur to an already spectacular event.

Along with College Colours, awards for International Representation as well as several Special Awards are reserved for sportsmen with exceptional performance in their respective sports.

The Maalyn Dias Scholarship for the most outstanding emerging sportsman was awarded to,

The R. A. B. A. Gunasekara Memorial Fund Awards were awarded to,

Youngest Athletics Coloursman  –              Anupa Liyanagunawardena

Most Outstanding Athlete            –              Sawinda Dissanayake

Youngest Rugby Coloursman     –              Samadhi Induwara

Most Outstanding Rugby Player –              Ovin Askey

Most Deserving Rugby Player    –              Janidu Dilshan

Himesh Ramanayake was awarded the Tirimanne Memorial Scholarship Award for the Best Bowler, another first in the history of the ceremony.

The most prestigious award of the night, the Group Captain D. S. Wickremasinghe Memorial Trophy awarded to the sportsman who has obtained colours in three or more sports was awarded to Dulanjan Fernando for his achievements in Water Polo, Diving, Gymnastics and Swimming.

The occasion was wrapped up by the Head Prefect with his wish that all athletes continue to “maintain the supremacy of all sports in true Royal spirit!”. As we close the chapter of another Colours Awarding Ceremony, one cannot help but recall the ethos that the night is built upon: “To Fight with honor, to win with glory, in gold we’ll write their triumphant story!”
