All Island Table Tennis Inter School Under 19 tournament was held on 26th and 27th of May at S. Thomas College Indoor Stadium. Royal College Under 19A division team was able to bring back the A division championship after 7 years (after 2011) by beating Dharmasoka College Ambalngoda in a nail biting finish. The team consisted of Nimesh Ranchagoda, Virunaka Hendahewa, Helitha Hendawitharana, Helika Adikary and Supul Wickramasinghe and was coached by Mr.Wajira Wickramasinghe and Mr.Chandika Priyantha.

The preliminary rounds were played in a league basis in groups. After being the Table Toppers of group, Royal was set a task to beat Ananda College, Colombo in the semi finals. Royal managed to overcome the challenge by beating Ananda with the final result of 3-1. Meanwhile Dharmasoka beat the defending champions Vidyartha in the Semi Finals and advanced to the Finals to face Royal. The stage was well set for a tough match. Royal team was backed by seniors, prefects, old boys, teachers and parents. Royal captain Nimesh Ranchagoda gave a good start by winning the first single (3-0). But the Sokians came back by beating Virunaka Hendahewa (3-1). Then Helitha Hendawitharana was to play the third single. He was able to lead the game (2-0) at the beginning, but the Sokian came back strongly to grab the third single (3-2). Sokians were leading the game 2-1 and it was again upto Nimesh to do his duty. Failure means title to the Sokians. He was down at the beginning 2-1 but managed to win the next 2 sets after a tough fight which sealed his unbeaten record throughout the tournament. Finally it was upto Virunaka to do the rest for Royal in the deciding match. The match seemed really tough till the end. Set score was 2-2. At the final set the Sokian was 10-9 leading which meant he needed only one point to grab the title, but Virunaka came strongly in the final moment to take the revenge of the earlier defeat and to bring the title after 7 years to Reid avenue. As per the saying “championships are won at the practices” hard work of the team paid off.
