The Inter-House Athletic Meet concluded on the 21st of February, following an afternoon full of excitement and rivalry. The five houses Hartley, Harward, Marsh, Boake, and Reed fought to be the centurion winner of the Royal College Championship Shield.

Known to be the oldest Shield in Royal College, the Championship Shield is awarded to the House with the highest points at the end of the Athletic Meet. First awarded in 1919, this year saw its 100th champion crowned as Reed House. It must be noted however that the sports meet had taken place much before the shield was introduced to College and the event as a whole is far older than a century.

Reed House captained by Radhith Nanaykara, emerged as champions with an impressive 949 points to their name; Defusing Marsh’s 4-year win streak. This was due to a consistent overall performance from all members of the house. Such efforts led to Reed house yet again emerging as victors of the Relay Championship as well.

Marsh House who’s 4-year tyranny was finally defused despite their efforts to accumulate a respectable 869 points. This included their victories in both the March Past and the House Decor competition. A commendable effort was shown by Seniru Amarasinghe who won the Best Athlete Award for his efforts in the Long Jump and High Jump competitions but were in the end insufficient to stop the ultimate champions; Reed.

Boake House placed 3rd with 776 points, followed by Hartley House placing 4th with 677 points. Last place was taken by Harward House who only managed to accumulate 492 points despite winning the prestigious Road Race.

The day was also graced by an array of stunning drill displays performed by the grade 7 & grade 8 students along with a rather exceptional display performed by the gymnastics team. Following the closing ceremony was a spectacular firework show as well as an after-party that was graced by the infamous DJ Duo “the Lunatics”. All students from every House celebrated this special event with a truly vivacious ending.

With the conclusion of another successful annual event may we quote our late Principle Major H.L. Reed “and raise a cheer for Hartley, Harward, Marsh and Boke.”
