A pool of talents, emerging from multiple disciplines including announcing, tech, art and graphics came together in October, to air the most awaited, and only student radio show in Sri Lanka, FM Royal 2022. Running from October 11 to 15, FM Royal 2022 returned to a long-awaited and the biggest audience since the Covid-19 pandemic. Thousands of listeners from over 50 countries tuned in for the five-day show that aired 24 hours, with Royalists at the helm.

While the student tech crew stayed overnight at the Royal College Skills Centre from where the shows were aired, the hosts of the Morning Show gathered in the early hours of the dawn to kick off a reverberating day. Behind the entertaining segments, students as young as 15,  juggled school, matches and examinations –  sharing food and laughter to bring together FM Royal 2022.

The five-day segment brought into the limelight several emerging talents of the Royal College. Skits written, produced and played by children in middle and upper school; singing sensations of Royal College, and talk shows kept the listeners entertained throughout the week. News written, produced and read out by the media unit was a popular segment, while Lunch Time Rush every afternoon attracted the most number of listeners.

Embracing the multi-ethnic, multi-racial diversity of Sri Lanka, FM Royal 2022 provided equal airtime in all three languages. Music, talk shows, news and interviews were aired in Sinhalese, Tamil and English in equal proportion throughout the five days.

Thanks to students participating from invited schools, special dignitaries and prolific members at Royal College, including the principal Mr P.A.S.P. Jayalath and the Head Prefect Kaveesha Ratnayake, this year’s event was a resounding success.

FM Royal’s groundbreaking series aired on FM 107.3 this year and was also available on fmroyal.live.
