When words fail, music speaks…

With great anticipation building up, the Western Music Society of Royal College was able to pull off the Festival of Choirs 2022 with much success after a lapse of 2 years. Festival of Choirs 2022 was held on the 14th of October from 6.30 pm onwards at the Bishop’s College Auditorium. The Royal College Choir, with the choirs of Bishop’s College, Ladies’ College, S.Thomas’ College, St. Joseph’s College, and Visakha Vidyalaya brought out an evening filled with delightful music and sound to an appreciative audience.

After overcoming many difficulties faced throughout the planning phase, the FOC Board and the Committee did not hesitate to give the audience the night they wanted. The Teacher-in-Charge of the Western Music Society, Mrs Priyanthi Sudusinghe, and The Choir Directress of Royal College, Ms Sureka Amerasinghe, dedicated their time and effort to guiding the students and committee to make the event a success.

Even though inclement weather prevailed on the day of the event, the auditorium was packed with an audience of 1500 both young and old, to celebrate the return of the Festival of Choirs making the saying ‘Music is a universal language even more meaningful. The event commenced after the arrival of the Principal of Royal College, followed by the Royal College School Song sung by the choir and a Classical selection of high standard. The first guest choir which took the stage was the choir of Bishop’s College, which sang two medleys paired with energetic choreography and gave the event a strong start. Later on, the choirs of S. Thomas’ College and Visakha Vidyalaya presented their items which were enjoyed by the audience. St. Joseph’s College put on a lively item and added a Sinhala song to its repertoire. Ladies’ College took on the stage with Africa by Toto, taking the event to greater heights. With the Royal College Choir taking on the stage with How deep is your love by the BeeGees and with a medley of some of the world pop-hits by the band One Direction, the audience was blown away and enthusiastically joined in by clapping and singing along.

The final item was the Combined Schools Choir made up of a few senior choristers from each participating school, which gave the event an unforgettable ending.
