Marine Biology Workshop
One of the main prevailing themes of the Royal College science association for the year 2022 is helping students explore and promote various fields related to modern science which doesn’t belong to the conventional fields that are taught in the local educational curriculum.
The Marine Biology Workshop was an interactive session organized by the Royal College Science Association in collaboration with the Science Society of Visakha Vidyalaya that was meant to fit this theme.
The project was held on the 10th of September with students participating from Royal College, Visakha Vidyalaya and a few other invited schools. These participants were able to learn a lot about the field of marine biology not just on a theoretical level but also on a practically applicable level.
The project was done under the supervision of, Prof. Tetney Pradeep, A professor at the University of Ruhuna who aided our schools with his expertise on the subject of marine biology.
As the starting element of the project, participants were able to take part in a beach clean-up session where they were taught how to properly sort out garbage in an Eco-Friendly manner under the instructions of experts in the field.
Then after, the participants were able to join an educative Snorkeling session which helped them learn about Snorkeling and the basics of field exploration in marine biology.
As the final element of the project participants were able to take part in an interactive demonstration of different types of marine life such as coral polyps, ocean ecosystems, and many other things related to marine life. Participants were able to experience the different types of marine life and were able to ask questions and interactively learn about marine biology with the help of instructors from the University of Ruhuna at their laboratories. Then they were able to learn insightful details on how to enter a field such as marine biology and its applications.
Overall this project was helpful for all the participants to study a different field of science that’s considered unconventional. Additionally, participants were able to listen to the wise words of, Prof. Sujeewa Amarasena, The vice chancellor of the University of Ruhuna and noted alumni of Royal College.
