English Drama Society is one of Royal College’s oldest clubs, and has a rich history steeped in tradition. For years, the Society has stood steadfast as one of the College’s most exalted clubs and has preserved its reputation as one of the best societies in the English Drama Societies in the island.
In the club year of 2021, we plan to take part in many exciting projects, such as;
● Weekly Development Program
● Word of the Bard
● Plot Twist
● Scripted ‘21
● Thespians Challenge Weekly Development Program is a project introduced in order to develop the skill-set required by the younger thespians for theatre and elevate their acting performances to perform in productions and take part in future competitions. Word of the Bard is an online poster campaign project initiated by the English Drama Society to share content related to drama such as: news regarding the theatre industry, our cooperation with other drama societies etc… Plot Twist is a scriptwriting workshop held to inculcate the central tenets of scriptwriting in young thespians in the wing of English Drama Society. Following Plot Twist, Scripted ‘21 is a scriptwriting competition organized by the English Drama Society of Royal College. The Thespians Challenge is an inter-school virtual Monologue Competition organized by the English Drama Society of Royal College. Monologues are a very important part of theatre be it traditional or contemporary. It is also a very emotional tool that requires a lot of skill and training to pull off. By doing this competition we hope to incentivize students to harness and showcase their skill. Finally the English Drama Society of Royal College would take part in the “The All Island Inter-School Shakespeare Drama Competition” organized by the The Rotary Club of Colombo North and the Colombo YMCA. The membership of the club numbers in the dozens, and its ranks are filled with bright young thespians that are raring to have a go at the stage. All of these projects and more inundate the club year with intensive and taxing labor, but at the end of the tunnel, memories will be made that will last a lifetime.
