We as the Wilderness & Wildlife Protection Society of Royal College plan to carry out many successful projects upholding the name of the club. We plan to carry out our projects focusing on Awareness, Research & Conservative Measures in modified and unmodified landscapes.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we plan to carry out the vast majority of our projects online. For the first quarter, we have planned to start our club year through the project “Branches 21’, where we plan to educate the students about wildlife and nature conservation through weekly lectures that will be conducted by respected organizations and individuals in this field and by the board of the society as well as various competitions will be organized by the society. In addition to the above-mentioned initiatives, we will organize skill sessions and maintain a social media profile as a part of the project. Branches 21’ project will contain many phases throughout the year.
Next, we plan to carry out a new initiative called “The Public awareness Program 21” this project is initiated by the Wilderness & Wildlife Protection Society of Royal College in collaboration with the Globe Family of Royal College. The project contains two phases which the 1st phase of the project will be a panel discussion with 3 professionals in the fields of research, conservation, urban planning & designing. This will be filmed and uploaded on various media platforms. The 2nd phase of the project “Into the Hearts of the Voiceless” is a magazine launched by the Wilderness & Wildlife Protection Society of Royal College in collaboration with the Globe family of Royal College. In this situation, the 2 clubs have joined hands to raise awareness on “Animal welfare and sustainable development” by publishing a
magazine filled with articles from various people and various organizations to the general public. Using the sustainable development goals and diverting them towards animal welfare we would like to achieve our visions by raising awareness through this magazine. Into the Hearts of The Voiceless is an initiative launched to raise awareness and save our voiceless friends and live together in peace and harmony.
Next we plan to carry out the project “The Future of the Wildlife” which where we will be giving an understanding to the Younger Generations on how important it is to protect the wilderness and wildlife. This project intends to give the Younger Generation an idea of how important it is to protect the wildlife and the benefits gained from it not only to their generation but also to the next generations to come. For the second quarter, we plan to carry out a project to enhance academic Knowledge among students regarding the subject of Wildlife and Nature which is the project “Reports & Research 21’” The purpose of this project to initiate is to teach the members of WWPS about the current and arising problems occurring in Sri Lanka and how we could overcome such situation. This session will be advantageous for the members as they will be learning about the problems arising in rural areas of Sri Lanka and how those problems can be overcome with the proper measurements.
For the final quarter, we plan to carry out Three projects, firstly; “Wilderness Insight ‘21” where will be giving an understanding of how it is like working in the field of wildlife in Sri Lanka and also giving an idea towards the public about the major topics spoken about in the field of wildlife conservation. Secondly, we have planned on doing a project called “Inhale’21” where we plan on the topic of reducing Carbon emission. We intend to find solutions for air pollution due to carbon emission in urban modified landscapes and make people aware of it to minimize carbon emission. Finally, “Zoology Lab Renovation 21” is a project we will be organizing to maintain a decent standard of the zoology laboratory throughout the year. This project is organized to enhance the standards of the education level of A/L bio students by renovating and re-furbishing the taxidermy animals needed for the laboratory with guidance from the director of the Natural History and Science Museum of Colombo.
Originally beginning as a rag-tag group of students with dreams of making it big, the hard work and dedication of the batches that followed soon propelled the association into an era of excellence, into one that engages in a multitude of wilderness and wildlife-related activities including; Animals, Plants, Human beings and Earth as a whole.
