The Royal College UNESCO Club was founded in 2007 with the contribution of the National UNESCO Association and was turned into a student body in 2020.Its purpose is to serve the school and community through the avenues of education, culture, social services, environment, science and technology. We are promoting services on both school and national levels to uplift the condition of every human being to make them create a comfortable living style. The UNESCO Club year for 2020/2021 began in January of 2021. We as the UNESCO Club of Royal College plan to carry out many successful projects. We plan to carry out our projects focusing on 5 main avenues, namely; education, culture, social services, environment, science and technology.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic we have planned a lot of new projects that can be carried out through social media as well as other means of online methods such as Quiz Comp’21, IMPLEXIS’21, Learning for Empathy, Rave’21 and many more. One of the main projects that have been planned for the 12th consecutive year is to celebrate the annual Sinhala and Tamil New Year with the patients in Halfway Home Mulleriyawa. With the Covid 19 situation on mind we have planned to carry out this project adhering to all health guidelines.
Quiz Comp’ 21 is an online quiz competition that will include questions related to the five sectors of the UNESCO Club. Here we plan to include important questions about UNESCO world heritage sites. The main objective of this project is to shed light on to the above fields in order to understand the importance of them. Thus, we are able to shape a better society to live in by knowing and respecting rights, laws and regulations. Sri Lanka National Commission for UNESCO in collaboration with the Royal College UNESCO club has organized the project ‘Learning for Empathy’.
The students’ classroom engagement, not caring for others, selfishness, aggressiveness, students’ frustration, disrespecting others, the level of relationship with colleagues and teachers, and communication with others are considered as the factors for identifying the ‘empathy’ needed students. They will be encouraged and motivated to get the leadership and involve in the said project activities. The major part of the project is to do an awareness program for the general public, based on the theme of ‘Learning for Empathy’ as well as promote the good practices related to Empathy by using quotes and video clips.
All in all, the UNESCO club plans to carry out not just projects with outstanding results but a decade long legacy that will be protected and lived up to for many years to come. The year 2021 will be no different.
