Royal College Wushu was initiated in 1992 with Sifu Prasanna Jayaweera as the first coach. The first captain of Wushu at the Royal College was C. Chandrarathna.
Wushu is composed of two disciplines: Taolu and Sanda.
Taolu involves material art patterns and maneuvers for which competitors are judged and given points according to specific rules. Modern Wushu competitors train in aerial techniques, including 540° and 720° and even 900° jumps and kicks to add more difficulty and style to their forms. When we turn back to the past and look at the development of the sport at the College today, there has been a significant improvement with the team retaining top positions in the All-Island and Western province tournaments. These developments have been seen due to the combined efforts of Sifu Prasanna Jayaweera and Sifu Duminda Perera.
