The encounter was concluded on the 2nd of May 2014, as the spectators witnessed the first convincing win for Royal, with a mammoth margin of 52 points! A great team effort by each and every one of the team members, which ultimately went on to be the key factor in this demolition of a rugby match.

However, the first half was a little shaky for both sides, as the wet condition caused by the pouring rain made ball handling a challenge, where knock forwards and inaccurate passes were not a rare sight.

The first half commenced with Royal kicking off, after which, Royal managed to draw first blood with skipper Nimshan Jayawardena converting an awarded penalty, which placed the Royalists’ 3 points ahead of DSSC.  However, DSSC managed to bounce right back with a converted penalty, where the scoreboard read 03 – 03.

DSSC, after leveling the scores through the converted penalty, created an opportunity and scored through the three quarters. Conversion was unsuccessful, and it saw the scoreboard ticking in favour of DSSC, where it read RC 03 – 08 DSSC.

Royal however, was quick in response, as wing three quarter Banuka Gamage touched down for a try, after a beautfully created opportunity by the line of three quarters. The conversion was unsuccessful, and it leveled the scores once again, at 08 all.

With roughly 20 minutes to play, the first half was uneventful, as both teams were sloppy in their ploys, until right at the stroke of halftime, centre Umesha Madushan scored through a strategically created opportunity by the three quarters, which was then converted into a goal with ease by Skipper Nimshan Jayawardena. At the halftime break, scoreboard was in favour of the Royalists. RC 15 – 08 DSSC.

The Royalists, after some inspiration from the Head Coach, picked up where they left off in the first half. The second half was smooth sailing and all uphill for the Royalists, as the potential of the Royalists was showcased, as multiple goals were scored through the Three Quarters as well as the forwards. The try scorers include Skipper Nimshan Jayawardena, Nikila Gunadeera, Akash Iddawela & Daniel Gulasekharam.

The quality and fluency of the Rugby being displayed left both the spectators and the DSSC players in awe and amazement, as there was no stopping the Royalists from dominating and taking home the win.

The encounter came to a close when the Referee blew for full time, with the scoreboard reading 60 – 08 in favour of the Royalists.

A brilliant display of sound Rugby, as this encounter will definitely be a moral and confident boost ahead of the Bradby Shield Encounter.

Skipper Nimshan and the rest of the team will face the Trinity Lions at home on the 10th of May as the boys will most definitely give it their 100% and look forward to bringing the Shield back to College.
