The Primary Section is focused on providing a strong foundation for young students upon which skills can be built. Thus, it lays much emphasis on basic everyday education. For this task, the Primary is divided into five separate grades with classes being conducted in Sinhala and Tamil languages.

Along with in-class learning, the highest priority in the Primary is given to improving the students’ social skills. Cub Scouting is one of the more popular extracurricular activities offered in the primary section, with Royal being home to the largest Cubbing Troop in the country. Cubbing is offered for students from Grade 3 to Grade 5. Over the course of the 3 years, through completing various activities and qualifications, the students are taught valuable practical skills such as teamwork and camaraderie, critical thinking, self-sustenance, and independence.
