The Royal College Computer Society was founded in 1982 by Mr. W.A. Wickramasena by the name “Programmers’ Club of Royal College” to be the first school level Information Technology society in Sri Lanka. Mr. H. W. De Silva and Mrs. Manel Manage were appointed as Master in charge and Teacher in charge.
Since then the RCCS played a more prominent role in inspiring innovation among students of the Royal College. Since its inception, the RCCS has had strong participation in major ICT events at college and across the country.
The main area of focus of the club is the Information Technology field. Such as
Software Development, Graphic Designing, Robotics and more. The main avenues of the club are, Armitage for programming, Zenith for robotics, Insignia for designing, Frostbyte for esports, Orthodox for competitions.
Some of the main projects done by RCCS are,
● BTUI Convention
● “The Syntax” Magazine
● Royal College Sports App
Due to the current Covid-19 pandemic we plan to carry out the vast majority of our projects online, maintaining social/physical distancing guidelines. The main platform we will be using for said projects is the Royal College Computer Society’s Discord Server. For the half we will be starting off with the services projects provided by us for the school and it’s clubs and societies. Such as websites, mobile applications, graphics and videos. These will be done by the Development Teams and the Graphic Teams of RCCS, to which any club member can join. Next quarter we will be starting with our networking sessions for Robotics, Programming and Graphic Designing, where we will be exploring and teaching about the respective fields. These will be hosted on the RCCS Discord Server and anyone can participate in them
In July we will be releasing the Royal College Sports App version 2.0 with refreshed UI and new features for you to stay up-to-date with sports events at school. We are also planning to host the XNOR ’21 Algorithm Competition which is an algorithm development competition. This contest is targeted for the participants of the Programming Networking Sessions, but will be open to everyone. The competition will continue for 4 weeks with 2 tasks each week to be completed. In August we will be having the Cerebro Quiz Competition where the winners will be chosen for the quiz team of RCCS to participate in island-wide ICT quiz competitions. We will also be having the FLOSS Awareness Workshop to raise awareness about the Free & Libre Open Source Software movement. We will also be making all development projects by RCCS open source so we can give back to the community and help the advancement of technology. We plan to release “The Syntax Technological Publication” which is an online magazine with articles curated from the members of the Computer Society.
For the final quarter, we will be organizing our main project for the year, “The Beyond the UI ICT Convention”. This will be a week-long convention where we will be having intra-school and inter-school competitions and important workshops and speeches by prestigious members of the community. This will be a new experience for everyone where we are planning to do something new to break the tradition of Video conference calls. We will also be having our O/L GIT seminar, A/L ICT seminar and A/L GIT seminar to help students that are facing milestone national examinations to achieve their best. These will be carried out by our ICT Teachers at Royal College.
All in all, we plan to carry out a number of highly successful and innovative projects to help Royal College and society in general. Ultimately improve the club’s standards to inspire innovation among all the Royalists.
