The Royal College Astronomical Society is a student-run non-profit organization which has been a pioneer in promoting astronomy among youngsters across Sri Lanka since its inception in 1967, during the tenure of Principal B. G. Premarathne. Throughout the 50 years of its journey the Astronomical Society has ignited passion and inspired many young students to pursue knowledge in the vast fields of Astronomy. From humble beginnings – the Astronomical Society has produced many eminent scientists and astronomers but has also reached international heights in ways which many deemed impossible. The current Guinness World Record for the most number of water rockets launched simultaneously is held by Royal College through the efforts of the Astronomical Society. The society conducts many workshops and night camps for rural students in order to increase their awareness about astronomy. With a current member base of over 150 students, the society holds lectures on a weekly basis and organizes sky observation camps and workshops for students annually.
