Ever since the sport’s reintroduction in 2015, Royal College Fencing has broken beyond boundaries in Sri Lankan fencing at school and national level. In 2016, when the first National tournament was held, swift victory was achieved. However due to an emergence of far greater competition in the coming years, victory eluded the school in the years 2017 and 2018. Nevertheless, hardened with each defeat the team practiced with diligence and dedication especially in the months following the tournament. 

 

The big day finally came on the 30th of January with the team being led by the Captain Sahan Girihagama and Vice Captain Maneka Gamage. The 4th National schools fencing championship commenced at the MAS arena of Royal College where the juniors of the under 15 team, faced off against many rival schools with St Thomas College being one of them. After the valiant play by the under 15’s, the senior’s latter continued on the 31st of January, where bouts between young men could be witnessed at every corner of the arena. After an overwhelming abundance of energy spent under the white fencing garb, the tournament finally came to its final phase.

 

All competitors lined up for the awarding ceremony which was graced by the chief guest and guest of honor Mr Thilakaratne Dilshan and Mr Kusal Perera respectively. Royal College was then finally awarded overall champions for the Year 2019 as the ceremony ended with a stunning combination of 2 gold, 3 silver and 7 bronze medals while the school junior B team won 2 silver and 2 bronze medals.
