Baseball at Royal College was introduced in late 1984 with the donation of equipment, and the first team was formed in 1985 under the leadership of Principal C.T.M. Fernando. Notably, Royal College’s entry into Baseball coincided with the founding of the Sri Lanka Amateur Baseball Association. The college’s debut team, captained by K.M.C. Fernando, became runners-up in the first National Baseball Championship, which was categorized as “Men’s Open” with no age restrictions. K.A.J.P. Kahandawala was recognized as the tournament’s best all-rounder, securing the Mercantile Credit Challenge Cup. Royal made history by winning the National Baseball Tournament for the first time in 1991, defeating Joseph Vaz College. In 1993, Royal won the inaugural Under-13 Little League Tournament, and in 1995, Deepal Amarathunga, an Old Royalist, led the Sri Lankan team at the first Asian Baseball Championship in the Philippines.

Royal College Baseball has grown significantly, continuing to make its mark on the national stage. In 2016, the team became runners-up in the Under-17 and champions in the Under-19 National Championship. This success continued with Under-18 Championship wins in 2017 and 2018. In 2019, Royal hosted the U-20 All-Island Tournament and emerged as National Champions. However, due to the prevailing situation in the country, events in 2020 were cancelled, and training moved online. Meanwhile, Elle—a traditional Sri Lankan sport similar to Baseball—was introduced to Royal in 2004 by Viraj Hettiarachchi under Principal Upali Gunasekara. Since then, the college has won numerous circuit and zonal tournaments, with Mr. Gunawardhana currently serving as coach. Both sports continue to show strong development and are poised for a bright future at Royal.
