The game “first awoke” at Royal with the donation of Baseball equipment in late 1984, with the first Baseball team selected in 1985. In 1985, C. T. M. Fernando instituted the first school baseball team in Royal College, Colombo, where he was Principal. It is also important to note that Royal College celebrates its 27th anniversary in the same year as the governing body for Baseball in the country, Sri Lanka Amateur Baseball Association.
The Royal Team, captained by K.M.C Fernando, became the runners-up at the first National baseball championship, the John H. Reed Challenge Trophy. Then the tournament was categorized as “Men’s Open” and had no age limit for the players. K.A.J.P.Kahandawala, a brilliant baseball player and the lead pitcher, won the mercantile credit challenge cup for the best all-rounder in the first National tournament. In 1991 Royal College won the National baseball tournament for the first time in its history by beating Joseph Vaz College Wennappuwa. It was the first defeat for Joseph Vaz College at a final of the under 21 National tournaments, which they had won since 1985.
In 1993, it won the first Under 13 Little League Tournament organized by the Baseball Association. Two years later, the Sri Lankan squad, which took part in the first Asian Baseball Championship held in the Philippines, was headed by Deepal Amarathunga, an Old Boy.
Presently, Royal College Baseball continues to keep up the success it had.
In 2016, the team became Runners Up at the Under 17 and winners at the Under 19 National Championship.
In 2017 and 2018, it won the Under 18 Championship.
In 2019, the team emerged as National Champions. The sport continues to grow and shows positive signs for the future.
