Hockey was introduced to the Royal College in 1916. At that time, the main trophy was the T. B. Jayah Shield for Senior School champions. The first captain of Royal College hockey was Lionel Almeida, who paved the way for hockey to become what it is by setting the example followed by hockey captains even today.
The first Royal-Thomian hockey encounter, for the ‘Orville Abeynaike Memorial Trophy,’ was initiated in 1999. Royal College emerged victorious for the first time in this encounter in 2007. Other encounters include the Royal-Trinity hockey encounter, Royal-Wesley hockey encounter, and Royal-Kingswood hockey encounter.
One of the highlights in the Royal College hockey calendar is the ‘Blue and Gold Hockey Tournament’ organized by the Old Royalists’ Hockey Club, which attracts participation from teams around the country.
