The Royal College has long been renowned for its focus on Academics and all other priorities of the College, be they co-curricular or extra-curricular, are always developed with the focus of supplementing and improving on the academic experience of its students.
From its inception in 1835, the School has increased its student base from 20 to over 8,500 with a marginal difference every year according to intake. Each of these students are exposed to the very best of the Sri Lankan education system, with strong infrastructure, a conducive learning environment, and an excellent administrative system to put it all together.

From the moment of admission to the time of leaving the school, a student at the Royal College is tended to with a multifaceted approach to learning and growth. The Primary, Middle and Upper Sections are designed to provide the appropriate blend of challenging and encouraging experiences for the respective ages. Though the national syllabus is followed and students are provisioned with the skills to succeed in competitive examinations, creativity and inspiration are never forgotten.

Though the value of hard work and dedication is immeasurable, the College wishes to recognize and honour the deeds of its students. Thus, numerous prizes for academic excellence are awarded, each with its own prestigious history that far predates its contemporary winner. The Prize Giving, one of the oldest events in the school, is a day of great significance; it is graced by the presence of the head of the state as well as several distinguished persons of repute and serves to celebrate the toil of the deserving.
